Methlsulfonyl Methane – “The Miracle Supplement”

In case you haven’t heard, there is supplement dubbed the miracle mineral supplement”which has been proven to lower inflammation, boost the immune system, speed up recovery of muscle damage after exercise (without the need for growth hormone), improve skin health by strengthening keratin, fight stress, increase energy levels and may have cancer-fighting properties.

Aside from having a substance name almost impossible to pronounce, (Methylsulfonylmethane abbreviated to MSM), it is becoming more evident, that sulfur supplementation is a necessity in our increasingly toxic environment. In addition, current research in numerous PubMed articles have discovered the role MSM can play in possibly helping to prevent cancer and even shrinking tumors including:

  • Head and neck cancers
  • Colon Cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Prostate cancer cells

  • The inclusion of sulfur is becoming more recognised as an essential element for optimising health, along with an alkaline diet for reducing inflammation and degenerative diseases. After calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, sulfur is the fourth most abundant mineral in a normal functioning body. It is essential for the body to help make and bind amino acids and proteins.

Oxygen, which is enabled by sulfur, allows the body to help ‘cure’ itself through cellular regeneration. The interaction of oxygen is what makes sulfur so important for a healthy body and quality of life. The bottom line is, without nourishing the body with enough sulfur to enable oxygen flow, it will slowly die from a myriad of health problems.

Further to this, a lack of sulfur results in the body’s connective tissues (cartilage, tendons, ligaments) becoming stiff and rigid, something we know is a common ailment of old age. Sulfur is also necessary for collagen synthesis and puts elasticity back in between proteins. When proteins bind together, there is something called T-bars to help bind those proteins and it’s made of two substances – one being sulfur. It’s used for detoxifying and allows fluid back into the cell structure through what’s referred to as a sodium-potassium pump, and when that pump starts to close off, sulfur allows the pump to work more efficiently by opening up and flushing out every poisonous cell from our system such as mercury, lead, nickel and pesticides.

Fun fact: If you’re fortunate enough to live in Iceland, they enjoy some of the world’s lowest levels of the chronic ailments that are at epidemic levels in so many modern countries around the world. Their secret weapon is all the volcanic activity which originally formed the island. Iceland’s soil and water are full of natural sulfur ash.

MSM is a sulfur-containing compound commonly found in green plants, humans and vertebrate animals. As a supplement, it is produced in a lab and is recommended to take in its pure form as a powder.

    MSM Supplement Benefits

MSM can be used topically or food grade and consumed by mouth. It’s more commonly used to treat all forms of arthritis including osteoarthritis and generally any form of degenerative joint disease, given it assists with repairing connective tissues, joints, tendons and ligaments.

    Benefits include:

    What is MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)?

Methylsulfonylmethane, also known as dimethyl sulfone (methyl sulfone) or DMSO2, is the oxidized form of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), an organic sulfur compound with the formula (CH3)2SO2. It’s white in colour and odourless. It’s an organic sulfur-containing compound that is commonly used to improve immune function, lower inflammation and help restore healthy bodily tissue and cells. MSM is also a very popular joint health supplement and is also found naturally in some green vegetable, animals and humans.  It is also found naturally in the atmosphere above marine areas.

MSM is a white crystalline solid at room temperature (m.p. = 109 °C) whereas DMSO is typically a liquid (m.p. = 19 °C). The sulfoxide is a highly polar aprotic solvent and is miscible with water; it is also an excellent ligand. MSM is less reactive than DMSO because the S-atom of the sulfone is already in its highest oxidation state (VI). Indeed, oxidation of the sulfoxide produces the sulfone, both under laboratory conditions and metabolically.”

MSM can also be used in conjunction with other anti-inflammatory supplements, such as dimethyl sulfide and sulfone DMSO, glucosamine, chondroitin and boswellic acid.

Are there any side effects to MSM?

MSM is generally well-tolerated given it’s naturally already present in our bodies. There are few reported side-effects of MSM, but there are also aren’t to many large, controlled human studies that have looked into the long-term effects.

According the Arthritis Foundation in the US, there was a reputable pilot study conducted which analysed the effects of 6,000 milligrams of MSM consumed daily by patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. The result was it effectively improved their symptoms of pain and general physical function without any serious side effects.

The mild side-effects of MSM reported include:

    • Indigestion
    • Upset stomach
    • Diarrhea
    • Bloating
    • Headache
    • Itching
    • Nausea

CAUTION: MSM is not suitable for people taking blood-thinning medication.

Usage in pregnancy and breast feeding:

Given there is not enough information and studies completed, stay on the safe side and avoid using. All risks and benefits should always be discussed with your doctor before taking any supplements.

    Sulfur Food Alternatives

It is always recommended to obtain all your vitamins and minerals from raw foods like cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts etc.), pasture-fed eggs, nuts, seeds and grass-fed beef (stock broth). However, if the food is not fresh, some of the natural sulfur can be lost when they’re cooked at high temperatures.

    How much do I take?

It is recommended to take 500 milligrams of food grade MSM, three times daily as a starting does for the treatment of osteoarthritis. A report from drugs.com (know more, be sure), recommends up to 3-6 grams daily, 3 times per day seems to be well tolerated.

Simply put the recommended dosage into a glass and then mix in, cover enough with water so you can stir and drink quickly. Wash it down with water or a flavoured drink.

The following was recommended by Webmd.com in the dosage tab and have been confirmed by scientific research:

    By Mouth:

    • For osteoarthritis: 1.5 to 6 grams of MSM daily taken in up to three divided doses for up to 12 weeks has been used. 5 grams of MSM plus 7.2 mg of boswellic acid taken daily for 60 days has been used. A specific product (Artrosulfur C, Laborest Italia S.p.A) containing MSM 5 grams, boswellic acid 7.2 mg, and vitamin C taken daily for 6 months has been used. One capsule of a combination of collagen type II with MSM, cetyl myristoleate, lipase, vitamin C, turmeric, and bromelain (AR7 Joint Complex, Robinson Pharma), taken daily for 12 weeks, has been used. 1.5 grams of MSM taken daily plus 1.5 grams of glucosamine in three divided doses daily for 2 weeks has been used. MSM 500 mg, glucosamine sulfate 1500 mg, and chondroitin sulfate 1200 mg taken daily for 12 weeks has been used.

    By mouth:

For hemorrhoids: A specific gel containing hyaluronic acid, tea tree oil, and MSM (Proctoial, BSD Pharma), applied daily for 14 days, has been used.

    How do I store MSM?

MSM powder should be stored in a cool, but not cold, dry area such as on a kitchen shelf.

    What is the shelf life?

Given it is a pure substance and contains no fillers or binders, it has an indefinite shelf life but may lose potency over time. A safe bet is to consume within a 12-month period.
